Child Care -
Schoharie County, through the Schoharie
County Community Action Program, Inc., provides child care resource and
referral services to community families and local businesses. The CCR
& R also mentors individuals who wish to become registered Family
Day Care Providers. Currently there are 18 registered family day care
homes, five licensed group family day care homes, one after school
program, and eight childcare centers in Schoharie County.
Shopping -
Schoharie County is known for its variety
of fresh farm produce stands. Other retail services are located
throughout the area, but are concentrated in Cobleskill, Middleburgh and
Schoharie. Three major and numerous smaller grocery stores are within
easy access of all Schoharie
communities. Numerous antique and gift stores contribute to
Schoharie’s shopping opportunities.

Cobleskill Regional Hospital, a 40-bed
facility providing emergency and primary health services. There are 14
area hospitals, including two medical centers: Bassett Hospital in
Cooperstown and Albany Medical Center.

These are the six public school districts
operating in Schoharie County.
Training and Education Programs
SUNY Cobleskill, and Schoharie County Vo-Tech offer a number
of general and customized training programs for area employers.
The Schoharie County Education and Training Coalition
provides customized training for employers as requested. Programs have
included forklift driver training for a new distribution center,
computer training for small businesses, management training for the
local hospital and customer service training for local retailers. More

Colleges and Universities
State University of New York College of Agriculture and
Technology
at Cobleskill (SUNY Cobleskill) is a fully accredited,
comprehensive, residential college enrolling approximately
2,500
students annually. The college offers 13 bachelor’s
(Bachelor of
Business Administration, Bachelor of Technology and Bachelor
of
Science) and 43 associate’s degrees (Associate of Arts,
Associate of
Science, Associate of Applied Science) Areas of study
include
divisions of Agriculture and Natural Resources; Business and
Computer Technologies; Culinary Arts, Hospitality and
Tourism; Early
Childhood; and Liberal Arts and Sciences. SUNY Cobleskill
offered
its first Bachelor of Technology degree in 1987. SUNY
Cobleskill is
accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and
Secondary Schools. The Department of Education of the State
University of New York registers all academic programs.
Infrastructure
-
Schoharie County's infrastructure is well
suited to provide for the needs of business and industry.
Highways: Interstate 88 and US Route 20 take an
east-west path through the northern section of the county. The New York
State Thruway can be accessed from both the east and west ends of the
county, providing access to Syracuse, Buffalo and points west as well as
Boston to the east, New York City to the south and Montreal (via the
Northway) to the north. Main county routes include NYS Routes 7, 10, 23,
30, 30A, 145 and 990V.
Airports: Albany’s International Airport is 35
minutes away, providing national and international flights. Scheduled
commercial flights are also available from Schenectady County Airport
and Oneonta Municipal Airport. Schoharie has one airport privately owned
by Sharon Air Park Inc. This airport is available for limited public
use. It uses mostly small private planes with single engines. Located
on Rt. 20 in the Village of Sharon Springs. There is also a small
landing strip located in the Village of Duanesburg. These airfields are
too small to support commercial aviation activity.
Rail Service: CP Rail provides freight service east
west through the northern portion of Schoharie County, parallel to I-88.
Amtrak provides passenger service to Amsterdam, Schenectady and
Rensselaer (1-800-872-7245).
Ports: The Port of Albany, operated by the Albany
Port District Commission, is located less than 1 hour from Schoharie
County. Telephone (518)463-8763 or Fax (518) 463-8767.
Bus Service: The Schoharie County Public
Transportation System provides local service and commuter service to
Albany and Schenectady. Call (518) 234-0952 or 1-800-551-2877 for
schedule and rates. Long distance service is provided by Vermont
Transit Lines (518) 234-2148. There are also several privately owned
taxi services. Located in the Village of Cobleskill, there is a private
taxi cab service within the village, there is some limited
transportation provided through the college for the benefit of its
students.
Utilities: Electrical Service is
provided by Niagara-Mohawk Power Corporation (800-664-6729), New York
Electric and Gas (607-729-2551), and Richmondville Power and Light
(518-294-6681), which is known for its attractive power rates. New York
State Electric and Gas has received the franchise rights to develop
natural gas service in Cobleskill and Carlisle. Public water and sewer
are available in the Villages of Cobleskill, Schoharie, Middleburgh,
Richmondville and Sharon Springs. Public water supplies are also found
in Central Bridge, Conesville and Jefferson.
